In early January, Sayra was approved for the kidney transplant list! By early February she was told by her team that her husband Brian could be tested to see if he was a match. After a couple of months of testing the family was ecstatic to find out he was a match! Not only was he a perfect match, but his kidney function was better than average which was very encouraging! So on May 10, 2021 my mom went in for surgery. However, on May 11th their lives changed very suddenly.
Sayra was told that a clot had developed in the donor kidney she received from her husband Brian and that she needed emergency surgery. A whirlwind of unfortunate events happened and she landed in the ICU for 3 weeks on a breathing machine during most of those days. By the end of her hospital stay she was told the new kidney sustained so much damage from the clot that the function looked very poor.
In the months that have followed we have all remained hopeful that the new kidney would have some use in her but in late July she was given the devastating news that the new kidney had failed and is not functioning at all. Worse of all she would have to undergo another surgery to remove the newly transplanted failed kidney.
Today, Sayra and her family is no longer looking towards the future of another kidney transplant since this one puts her 10 years out before another opportunity would be available based on the transplant wait list.
Sayra is much weaker than she was before but her positive spirit has not dimmed amidst her struggles. Her hopes have shifted a bit, nowadays she talks about wishing she could see the Redwood forest and the Grand Canyon.
Due to her daily dialysis, Sayra has not traveled in many years. Sayra has desired and hoped to see the California Redwoods, the Coast of California and other national treasures. However, due to her medical condition, Sayra would need some kind of RV/camper with an electrical hookup for her machine. She says in a few years when the medical bills hopefully get paid off she wants to get a camper so the family can see these places she has always wanted to visit. Her husband Brian even takes her to RV dealerships on occasion just to see her smile as she imagines making her dreams of the redwoods a reality one day.
Her family in California and Utah have little hope for her future holds for her in terms of her health, but what they do know is they all wish to do what they can to help fulfill her dreams. We at RealtyONEGroup Signature, after hearing of Sayra’s story and her simple wish to visit the California Redwoods and other national treasures with her family and along with your help, have committed to making her #ONEWish a reality. The family have started a fundraiser to raise $10,000 to purchase a small used RV for Sayria, Brian and her children to make memories with their mom. A small and simple request that will have lifelong impact on their lives.
